1. The best option is to close your checking bank account ASAP, this is the
best option. This is important as the bank will typically refund the first
claim and then you have to wait for them to investigate the subsequent
charges.
2. Make sure the bank is investigating the issues with checks and they
refund any funds that have cleared and are fraudulent for the initial claim.
3. File a police report in her home jurisdiction and get a copy. Ask the
officer, where she can get a copy and when. This is important for when
collection companies start harassment. It also reinforces the fact that
this is fraud and filing a false police report is a serious issue.
4. If debt collectors call, I had a lot of fun with this as I threatened to
sue them including the person making the call. Make sure she gets any
names if anyone calls, they don't like this and you can turn the tables and
puts them on the defensive. If they won't shut up, hit and hold the
telephone keys or get an airhorn to get their attention. Then indicate she
will be retaining a very expensive attorney such as King and Spalding to put
them out of business for a wrongful claim. They usually rolled over there,
and asked for a copy of the police report. Ask for a fax number and include
a covering letter and reference the claim number and this topic is now
closed.
5. Keep copies of everything including the claims. You may need to use Certified Mail to track the status of what you sent to the debt Collector
6. Get or setup call block on primary phone numbers that you use. Be
selective on answering calls that she does not recognize and let them go to
voicemail. If they repeat consistently, block them.
7. There is a Free cellphone App HIYA that can be useful to identify who is
calling. Do web searches on the phone numbers that you don't recognize
8. File with the FTC an Identify theft https://www.identitytheft.gov/
